Thursday, October 22, 2009: "Catholic–Mormon Dialogue on Priesthood and Sacraments"
Father Alexei Smith and Robert Millet met with students and friends of CMSSA for an informal afternoon
discussion, and engaged in a public dialogue in the evening. Smith is the Priest in charge of interfaith dialogue for
the Los Angeles Diocese, and Millet is a Professor at Brigham Young University.

Thursday, September 24, 2009: Daniel Walker Howe
Professor Howe met with students and friends of CMSSA for an informal afternoon
discussion, and presented a public lecture entitled "Joseph Smith’s America" in the evening.
Howe is author of the Pulitzer Prize winning history, What Hath God Wrought: The Transformation of
America, 1815-1848, and Professor of History Emeritus at UCLA and Oxford University.
He was also Rhodes Professor of American History at Oxford University from 1992 to 2002.
Howe was born in Ogden, Utah, and knows Mormons well.

Friday, September 11, 2009: Opening Social
CMSSA held its Fall 2009 opening social, where we be enjoyed burgers and snacks and meeting
new CMSSA members. It was great to see that CMSSA contininues in its slow and steady growth each year.

The Society for Mormon Philosophy and Theology hosted its sixth annual meeting at Claremont Graduate University,
which was entitled "Upon All Nations—Religious Pluralism".

Ulrich, 300th Anniversary University Professor, joined student and friends of CMSSA for an informal discussion.
She is the author of Good Wives: Image and Reality in the Lives of Women in Early New England, 1650-1750 (1982)
and A Midwife's Tale: The Life of Martha Ballard Based on Her Diary, 1785-1812 (1990) which won the Pulitzer
Prize for History in 1991 and became the basis of a PBS documentary.

Thursday, March 12, 2009: Brown Bag with Professor Anselm Min
Min, Professor of Religion at the School of Religion, joined us for an informal lunch discussion on the topic
“Are Works for the Dead Efficacious?”. Prof. Min's theological and philosophical interests are very diverse, ranging from theologies of liberation to
religious pluralism, and from Hegel to Derrida. He is the author of Dialectic of Salvation: Issues in Theology of Liberation,
The Solidarity of Others in a Divided World: A Postmodern Theology after Postmodernism, and Paths to the Triune God: An
Encounter between Aquinas and Recent Theologies.

March 6-7, 2009: Conference: "Parallels and Convergences: Mormon Thought and
Engineering Vision"
The Howard W. Hunter Chair of Mormon Studies in the School of Religion at Claremont Graduate University sponsored
this conference that sought to expand the discussion of Latter-day Saint perspectives on the
attributes of God and the potential of man by examining the possible resonance between Mormon and engineering thought.
Terryl Givens, eminent scholar in Mormon Studies, was the keynote speaker. (Location: Albrecht Auditorium and Stauffer 106, CGU)

"Through a Different Glass: Reconsidering the Puritans and their Legacy in American Religious History." Hall is the preeminent expert on American Puritanism, has pioneered
the field of "lived religion." His noted book Worlds of Wonder, Days of Judgment explores the religious lives of

Hall, John Bartlett Professor of New England Church History at Harvard Divinity School, joined student and friends
of CMSSA for an informal discussion. Hall is the preeminent expert on American Puritanism, has pioneered the field of
"lived religion." His noted book Worlds of Wonder, Days of Judgment explores the religious lives of ordinary New England

Tue, Feb 3, 2009: Brown Bag with Dean Karen Torjesen: This semester kicked off with a brown bag lunch with Dean Karen Torjesen.
This informal discussion focussed on Mormonism and Early Christianity -- how Mormonism has understood and appropriate doctrines and practices of early Christianity.
This event was a great opportunity not only to engage in an interesting discussion, but to interact with the Dean who has been so supportive of Mormon
